Mobberly’s Annual Rummage Sale Benefits East Texas Families

Mobberly   -
Longview, TX- Mobberly Baptist Church’s annual Rummage Sale will be held at the Exhibit Building at the Gregg County Fairgrounds on Oct. 19 and 20.
Hours are 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Friday, and 8 a.m. – 2 p.m. on Saturday. Money raised goes to the Family Services fund, providing residents of Gregg County emergency help with clothing, food, rent and utility money and a variety of other needs. The community comes to the sale to find great deals on used merchandise, and all of the proceeds go to help families in need.
Gregg Scobee volunteers to direct the massive sale every year.
“We have the Rummage Sale to not only help people get rid of the stuff they don’t need anymore, but to pass it along to people who do need it,” Scobee said. “It is very true that one man’s trash is another man’s treasure.”
You never know what you will find at the sale. From huge storage units filled with Christmas decorations to antiques, beautiful furniture to odd lamps and other interesting items.
“Everything under the sun gets donated – clothing, furniture, appliances, electronics, books, dishes, linens, toys, only to name a few,” he said. “We carefully go through everything that is donated.”
After expenses, the sale raises between $20,000 and $25,000, which is used by Mobberly to help people from our local area with food, utilities, and gas.
“There are many stories that have been shared with me over the years about how we blessed someone, but one stands out the most to me,” Scobee said. “Greg Martin, Mobberly’s Develop Pastor, came to me and said there was a woman who needed a bed, but only had $20. I met with her, and she told me she was afraid we couldn’t help her because she only had $20. We had  a bed. But it was attached to a mahogany headboard, with two bedside tables, a tall dresser and a long dresser with a mirror.  I told her she could have the bed and headboard for the $20, only if she took the whole bedroom set. She began wailing, and we delivered the furniture to her.
“About two years later, I was in a thrift store, and a lady called me by name and ran to hug me and said, ‘You don’t remember me, but I am the one you gave that bedroom set to.’ She is now the manager of that store and said that what we did for her was the beginning of her new life. What a blessing for me to know that I had a part in helping her turn her life around by just meeting a need and loving on her.”
The annual Rummage Sale is October 19 and 20 at the Exhibit Building of the Gregg County Fairgrounds. Mobberly Baptist Church members may shop early on Thursday, Oct. 18 from 6-8 p.m. for a donation of $5.
The Rummage Sale offers many ways for Mobberly members and guests to have an impact right here in East Texas:
– Work at the sale (and Monday-Thursday as the sale is being set up)
– Donate items to be sold
– Volunteer to engage people through a prayer and witnessing ministry during the sale
– Shop!
“We all need to be involved in some way in helping others, no matter how little we think it is,” Scobee said. “The Rummage Sale has been one of the most rewarding endeavors I’ve ever been involved in, and I always look forward to the next one.”
